Five Things Every Parent Should Teach Before Eighth Grade Graduation
Eighth grade graduation is an important milestone. It marks the end of one chapter and the beginning of a much bigger world—new schools, new responsibilities, and greater independence.
Before our children reach that moment, there are a few lessons that matter more than most. Not long lectures—just simple principles that help shape the kind of person they become.
Here are five things every parent should make sure their child understands before they graduate eighth grade.
1. Your Word Means Something
A person’s reputation is built on the promises they keep. If you say you’ll do something, follow through. Trust takes years to build and moments to lose.

Money represents time and effort. When young people understand that work leads to reward, they develop appreciation, discipline, and responsibility.
5. Respect Boundaries

Special Accolades this Week!
Recess Chess Tournament Crowns a Champion
What began as a fun way to pass the time during the cold indoor recess days of a Midwest winter turned into a spirited competition of strategy and patience at St. Pius X Parish School.
Since December, Mrs. Pohl has been hosting a recess chess tournament for students interested in testing their skills on the board. The tournament started with over 30 competitors, all eager to take part, but as the weeks went on the field narrowed round by round. Each match brought students one step closer to the final.
In the end, only one player remained standing.
Congratulations to 7th grader Max Rothermel, who was crowned the Champion of the Recess Chess Tournament after outmaneuvering the competition and claiming the final victory.
Thank you to Mrs. Pohl for organizing a fun and engaging activity that challenged students to think strategically, practice patience, and enjoy a little friendly competition during the winter months.

Celebrating Pi Day in Mrs. Pohl’s Math Class
Mrs. Pohl’s math students recently celebrated Pi Day in a fun and creative way while learning about the famous mathematical constant, π (pi). After studying the significance of pi, students were challenged to let their creative juices flow by designing and decorating their own pi-themed projects.
The results were both impressive and imaginative. Once the projects were complete, the St. Pius X staff had the opportunity to vote for the most creative designs.

This session will introduce brand new exciting models and lessons for the students to enjoy! Our one-of-a-kind technic LEGO® kits and model plans incorporate gears, beams, axles, bricks, motors & batteries packs! The students will explore a variety of STEM related topics during each weeks engaging lessons. Each session this school year will be unique with different lessons and models for the kids to construct. Every week the students will work to engineer a different motorized moving LEGO® machine! The Week in Photos
A walk through the halls of St. Pius X Parish School this week captured a number of special moments that highlight the everyday life of our students.
Our week included a rehearsal for the Sacred Music Concert, where students prepared for a beautiful performance later shared with the school community. The music and voices filling the space were a reminder of the faith and tradition that are part of daily life at SPX. We also included photos from Tuesday night’s Sacred Music Concert, capturing the students in performance. Special thanks to Mr. TJ Meehan for sharing these wonderful photos from the evening.
Elsewhere in the building, we caught some joyful and silly moments from our preschoolers and kindergartners, whose energy and laughter always brighten the day. Meanwhile, our 4th graders were hard at work, showing focus and determination as they tackled their studies.
In another classroom, our 5th graders stepped into the role of engineers, bringing their designs to life and learning through creativity, problem-solving, and hands-on building. Our 8th graders spent time discussing ideas about possible careers after high school, beginning to think about the many paths that may lie ahead of them.
And of course, our 7th graders were busy doing what 7th graders do best—bringing a little personality, curiosity, and fun to the day.
These candid moments are a great reminder that learning at St. Pius X is not just about the lessons in the classroom, but also about the friendships, creativity, and experiences that help shape our students each day.

All St. Pius X adult members — school and parish — are asked to complete a minimum of 6 volunteer hours each year to help support and strengthen our community.
Volunteer opportunities and hour tracking are now centralized through MobileServe. The platform includes a digital bulletin board of service opportunities and will serve as the official place to log all volunteer hours, whether through school events, athletics, parish ministries, or outreach efforts.

SPX Summer Care is a weekly summer program for children ages 3-5, offered over 11 weeks this summer (with the exception of June 28-July 3 due to parking lot work and school deep cleaning).
Each themed week is filled with hands-on activities, creative play, outdoor fun, and faith-filled moments - all led by our trusted SPX staff in a safe, nurturing environment.
The program runs Monday-Friday from 8:30 AM-3:00 PM and offers flexible week-by-week registration. Whether you need full summer coverage or just a few "Mom's Free Days," SPX Summer Care is a joyful and convenient option for your family.
Please we aware that:
- You child must be registered at St. Pius X Parish School for the 2026-27 school year.
- Space is limited. Your spot is not held until you complete the online registration and pay
- Children must be potty trained to attend.
- Limit of 20 students per week
- $250 per week
SPX Athletics Summer Camps Announced
St. Pius X Athletics is excited to offer a full lineup of Summer Camps for students of all ages, providing opportunities for young Knights to stay active, build skills, and have fun throughout the summer.
The season begins with Intro to Sports Camp (June 1–5) for students in Kindergarten through 4th grade, focusing on fundamental athletic skills, coordination, and teamwork. Young dancers can join Intro to Dance Camp (June 8–11) for students entering Pre-4 through 1st grade, introducing the basics of dance in a fun and welcoming environment.
Athletes can continue developing their skills at Volleyball Camp (June 22–26) for grades 3–8 and Basketball Camp (July 13–17) for grades 3–8, both emphasizing skill development, gameplay, and teamwork.
Dancers entering grades 2–8 can participate in Dance Technique Camp, held on select evenings from July 9 through August 13, focusing on building technique and preparing for future performances.
The summer concludes with Strength & Conditioning Camp (July 20–24) for grades 5–8, designed to help students improve strength, agility, endurance, and overall athletic performance.
These camps provide a great opportunity for students to stay active, develop new skills, and enjoy the spirit of St. Pius X Athletics all summer long.

Youth Ministry is Alive and Thriving at SPX!
Youth ministry, you might ask? What exactly IS youth ministry? Youth ministry offers a safe space for teens in our parish to come & gather to learn more about our Catholic faith. Is it like religion class? No, not exactly. The teens develop fellowship, are openly encouraged to ask questions about our faith, dig a little deeper into Catholicism, and have a new outlet to hang out in. They will learn more about who they are, their relationship with God, and gain faith encounters and experiences they may otherwise miss out on. Give YM a try - ya never know what God has planned for YOU!

Simply sign up for a student, add them to your daily prayers, and write a card or note to the student letting them know you are accompanying them on their journey with your prayers. Cards can be dropped off at the Parish or School Office through March 15th for Confirmation, 31st for Communion. Please be sure to write the name of the student (first name, last initial) and sacrament (Communion or Confirmation) on the envelope.

They will also be sharing stories of their own discernment and the background of their religious community.

Seoul, Korea (Optional pre-tour of South Korea and optional post-tour of Vietnam)
- The Diocese of Joliet is inviting all young adults(must be 18 by July 1, 2027)for World Youth Day in Seoul, Korea! Join us as we take part in the largest gathering young Catholics in the world. This pilgrimage offers an extensive tour of South Korea and also offers an option for a pre-tour to see more of South Korea, as well as a post-tour in Vietnam. Don’t miss this once in a lifetime opportunity! Proceeds from our pilgrimages are used to support our office as well as the seminarians during their formation.
